Croatia Tamara Boros was the one seeded player to suffer defeat in the top half of the draw in the opening round of the Women Singles event at the China Open in Tianjin on Friday 14th August 2009.
Seeded no.20, she was beaten in a close seven games encounter by a newcomer to the ITTF Pro Tour, Zheng Jiaqi of the United States.
Zheng Jiaqi won a hard fought seven games encounter to book her second round place, succeeding 7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 4-11, 12-10.
Disappointing Results
It was disappointment for the Croatian who in recent years has not enjoyed the best of times; in the past three years her best on the ITTF Pro Tour is the quarter-final stage of the Women Singles events in Austria, Germany and Poland.
Now, it is just over three years since she reached the semi-final stage of an ITTF Pro Tour Women Singles event; the last occasion was at the Chile Open in Santiago in July 2006.
Noticeable Difference
The performances are a far cry from 2004 where in ten outings on the ITTF Pro Tour she reached the Women Singles penultimate stage on no less than seven occasions and in 2002 climbed to the exalted position of no.2 on the ITTF Women World Rankings.
Comfortable Wins
Defeat for Tamara Boros but no problems for the highly seeded players.
China Liu Shiwen, the no.1 seed, overcame England Joanna Parker in four straight games (13-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7), whilst Hong Kong Jiang Huajun, the no.4 seed performed likewise against India Divya deshpande. She won 11-6, 11-4, 11-3, 11-9.
Similar Vein
Success for the no.1 and no.4 seeded players and also for the two ladies occupying the no.7 and no.8 places; in similar vein, they succeeded in four straight games.
Austria Liu Jia, seeded no.7, overcame Poland Katarzyna Grzbowska 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 whilst Korea Dang Ye Seo, seeded no.8, accounted for Italy Debora Vivarelli.
She won 11-8, 11-4, 11-2, 11-8.
Successes
There were also wins for Li Xiaodan (China), Sun Bei Bei (Singapore), Sayaka Hirano (Japan), Yu Meng Yu (Singapore), Hiroko Fujii (Japan), Zhang Rui (Hong Kong), Elizabeta Samara (Romania), Zhenqi Barthel (Germany), Wu Jiaduo (Germany), Fan Ying (China) and Reiko Hiura (Japan).
Singaporean Problems
The only one of the successful players in the top half of the Women Singles draw to experience serious problems was Yu Meng Yu.
Seeded no.15, she was extended the full seven games distance by Korea Jun Hye Kyung.
Yu Meng Yu won 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 15-13, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7.

当地时间8月14日，2009中国公开赛天津站来到正赛第一天的角逐。最先进行的女单首轮，上半区正赛种子选手大多表现稳健，唯有克罗地亚老将鲍罗斯以两分之差爆冷不敌美国选手郑佳琪，无缘晋级。
鲍罗斯首轮对阵的，是名不见经传的美国选手郑佳琪。原以为一边倒的战役，却打得异常激烈。郑佳琪前四局3:1遥遥领先，鲍罗斯连追两局，但第七局终局在10-8手握四个赛点的情况下，未能守住城池，最后以11-7,10-12,6-11,10-12,11-5,11-4,10-12痛失比赛。此外，上半区陷入七局苦战还有新加坡选手于梦雨，只不过她最终尝到了胜果，以7-11,11-9,6-11,15-13,5-11,11-6,11-7一路逆转淘汰了韩国老将田惠敬。
上半区其他场次，首度亮相单打赛场的各路名将大都以4:0结束了战斗。头号种子刘诗雯和队友李晓丹分别完胜英格兰的帕克和印度的莎米尼。四号种子中国香港的姜华珺也以4:0横扫印度的迪维亚；中国队另一位削球手范瑛轻取英格兰的西伯利。罗马尼亚的萨玛拉四局击败了中国香港小将于国诗；德国选手巴拉埃尔完胜日本的若宮三纱子。韩国的唐汭序、奥地利的刘佳、日本选手樋浦令子、德国的吴佳多也都兵不血刃闯关。

美国新星爆冷掀翻姜华珺 打范瑛直言“赢了就是赚”
新浪体育讯 8月14日，2009年中国乒乓球公开赛继续在天津市人民体育馆进行。在晚上结束的一场女单第二轮比赛中，美国选手郑佳琪以4比3力克中国香港名将姜华珺，爆出了本日的一大冷门。这名小将在上午的首轮比赛已经以4比3将克罗地亚名将鲍罗斯淘汰出局，是首日表现最抢眼的资格赛选手之一。
在混合采访区碰到郑佳琪时，她正在与亲友通着电话，大概是在报告获胜的喜讯；当记者提出采访要求时，她在吃惊之余似乎还有些不知所措，大概是还不太习惯接受采访吧！今年21岁的郑佳琪出生于山东，此前曾是北京队名帅周树森的门下，比现在风头正劲的丁宁稍晚一些进队。为了求学，三年前她选择了远渡重洋去到美国，如今已经成为加州西北理工大学的一名大一新生。
这次中国公开赛是郑佳琪的第三次公开赛，也是第一次参加美国站以外的公开赛，此前她的最好成绩是进入八强，不过那是在大多数强手都缺席的情况下。此番之所以能够连克两大高手，郑佳琪自己总结的原因是对方对她的不适应。“她(鲍罗斯)不太会打正胶，上午那场比赛我一直都压着她打。姜华珺的话，可能不太适应我的球。”郑佳琪不好意思地笑笑。
尽管已经接连掀翻两大劲敌，但接下来的路对于郑佳琪来说也绝不轻松：1/8比赛中，她就将遭遇中国队的削球手范瑛。“我已经N多年没跟削球打过了……”还带些稚气的小脸上露出了苦恼的表情。在美国，由于要兼顾学业的缘故，一般情况下她一周只进行三次训练，每次一个小时；即便是在比赛之前，她也仅仅将训练量提高到了一周四次、每次一个半小时，这甚至还赶不上中国国家队一天的训练量。
“不过，我的心理很放松，该怎么打怎么打，这比赛我要是赢了就赚了！”轻松的语气，正好证明了郑佳琪放松的心态。

China Wu Yang and Zheng Jiaqi of the United States, both players who had caused upsets in the opening round of the Women Singles event at the China Open in Tianjin, continued their patch of destruction in the evening of Friday 14th August 2009.
Both players, who had successfully negotiated the qualification stages on the first two days of play, maintained their splendid form to record unexpected second round victories.
Zheng Jiaqi caused the biggest upset by beating Hong Kong fourth seeded Jiang Huajun, whilst Wu Yang succeeded in the battle of the defenders. She overcame Li Jie of the Netherlands.
Results
Wu Yang won in five games posting victory by the margin of 11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6 against the no.12 seed; whilst in a hard fought duel Zheng Jiaqi prevailed in a full distance seven games conflict.
She won 5-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7.
Sun Bei Bei in Form
Undoubtedly, the wins recorded by Wu Yang and Zheng Jiaqi were the major surprises with the victory recorded by Singapore Sun Bei Bei, seeded no.17, over Japan Sayaka Hirano, seeded no.11, not gaining the same headlines.
Sun Bei Bei won convincingly in four straight games: 11-5, 14-12, 11-7, 11-6.
Top Three Seeds Impressive
therwise matters went very much according to plan.
China Liu Shiwen, the no.1 seed, recorded a six games victory over compatriot Li Xiaodan (11-4, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9) before Singapore Feng Tianwei, seeded no.2, overcame Japan Haruna Fukuoka in one game less (7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4).
Success for the top two seeds and success for the no.3 seed; Ding Ning defeated Hong Kong Lau Sui Fei in five games. She won 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 13-11, 11-3.
Victorious Players
Meanwhile, in the top half of the draw, Singapore Yu Meng Yu defeated Japan Hiroko Fujii in a close seven games contest, Korea Dang Ye Seo ended the hopes of Liu Sui Fei colleague, Zhang Rui and Austria Lui Jia defeated Romania Elizabeta Samara.
Not to be overshadowed, Wu Jiaduo won the all German battle against Zhenqi Barthel and Fan Ying proved too solid in defence for Reiko Hiura, also from Japan.
Japan and Hong Kong
Defeats for Japan and Hong Kong in the top half of the draw but in the lower half there was success.
Hong Kong Lin Ling and Tie Yana recorded respective wins over Romania Daniela Dodean and Chinese Taipei Huang Yi-Hua, whilst Japan Ai Fukuhara defeated Chinese Taipei Cheng I-Ching.
In the two remaining matches, Singapore Wang Yue Gu ousted Italy Nikoleta Stefanova and China Cao Zhen ended the aspirations of Poland Natalia Partyka.

当地时间8月14日，在天津举行的中国公开赛来到正赛第一天的角逐。晚间最先结束的女子单打第二轮比赛里，首轮击退鲍罗斯的美国选手郑佳琪爆冷势头不减，今晚她又以5-11,11-8,10-12,11-7,7-11,11-8,11-7七局拿下了赛会四号种子姜华珺，再度成为场上的焦点人物。此外，11号种子平野早矢香被新加坡的孙蓓蓓"剃了光头"，后者也藉此完成了一次畅快的复仇。
本轮两场内战分别发生在中、德队友之间。头号种子刘诗雯以11-4,9-11,11-7,9-11,11-3,11-9斩落了队友李晓丹；德国的吴佳多同样以六局终结了预赛打来的巴拉埃尔，比分为11-4,11-3,10-12,11-9,6-11,11-4。其他几位中国女将都是速战速决：范瑛4-11,3-11,12-10,9-11,11-6,4-11横扫日本的樋浦令子；丁宁以10-12,11-9,11-9,13-11,11-3五局逆转了中国香港的柳絮飞；曹臻以11-9,11-7,11-7,9-11,11-5淘汰了波兰的帕梯卡；武杨以4:1(11-9,11-7,11-9,9-11,11-6)战胜了荷兰的李洁。
北京奥运会的银牌乒团新加坡队，今晚的表现同样不俗。老将王越古11-5,11-6,11-4,17-15完胜意大利的斯蒂芬诺娃；冯天薇以7-11,11-5,11-8,11-8,11-4逆转击败了日本的福冈春菜。新秀于梦雨11-9,10-12,2-11,11-9,11-7,5-11,11-9七局力挫日本的藤井宽子，涉险晋级。上个月日本站曾被平野早矢香挡在决赛之外的孙蓓蓓，没有错失复仇良机，以11-5,14-12,11-7,11-6"回敬"了日本一姐。
中国香港队本轮女单可谓喜忧参半。除了姜华珺折戟、老将柳絮飞负于丁宁外，张瑞也没能抵挡住韩国选手唐汭序的进攻，以7-11,9-11,13-11,11-5,9-11,6-11告负。幸而其他两名主力帖雅娜、林菱没有失掉城池。帖雅娜以8-11,9-11,11-6,11-4,11-5,11-9反败为胜淘汰了中华台北的黄怡桦，林菱11-5,8-11,11-5,11-8,6-11,11-5力克罗马尼亚的杜迪安。
